William "Bill" E. Helwig Obituary

William “Bill” E. Helwig, 86, of Taneytown, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Lorien, Taneytown.  Bill was the loving husband of Mary Katherine (Reaver) Helwig, who preceded him in death on July 17, 2020.

Born March 24, 1939 in Silver Run, MD, he was the son of the late Earl L. and Mary L. (Swenk) Helwig.

He and Mary Katherine built and lived in the same house for almost 60 years. In their later years, they would spend their evenings sitting out in the front yard waving to cars as they drove past and going to every local carnival to listen to the music. Neighbors and strangers became friends stopping by the house to sit outside for a few minutes on their way home from work and by watching his granddaughter and, later, great-grandchildren dance to the music at the carnival when they were little.

Bill was an avid carpenter for work and as a hobby. He worked with various local builders including Stewart Kitchens, Kitchen Traditions and Valley Crest Builders. He served a very brief period of time in the Army Reserves. When he wasn’t working, you could always find him in his garage making wooden masterpieces that provided full function and mobility from toy tractors, combines, truck and antique cars to massive trains and cranes.

He is survived by his son, Malcolm E. Helwig and wife Lucy, Fuquay-Varina, NC; granddaughter, Katherine Berry and husband Matthew and great grandchildren, Liam, Madelyn and Charlotte.
