Dr. Douglas Edward Eyer Obituary

Dr. Douglas Edward Eyer, age 54 of Littlestown, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 , after a brave and well fought 2-year battle with esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by close friends, family, and his beloved three German Shorthair Pointers. Born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, son of John Emory David Eyer Sr and Darlene Kathryn (Dyarman) Eyer. Raised by his single mother since the age of 6 at the time of his father’s death from Lymphoma, Douglas leaves behind his wife Jolene Marie (Sauders) Eyer, daughters Allisyn Grace, Kathryn Elizabeth, and Carolyn Marie; brother John Emory David Eyer Jr, sister-in-law Pamela Sue (Day) Eyer, nephew John Philip and niece Anna Kathryn and his three beloved German Short-Haired Pointers; Nixie, Mr. Burns, and Violet. Douglas was a graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior Area High School Class of 1988 where he participated in numerous high school activities including Latin club, French club, the Forensics Club, Cycling Club, the Debate Team, and peer support. In addition, he was a member of the Junior Classical League, whose purpose was to encourage an inspiration in and an appreciation of the language, literature, and culture of Ancient Greece and Rome and to hand on the torch of classical civilization in the modern world. His other activities were the Drama Club where he was an active participant in West Side Story and The Curious Savage. He was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated salutatorian. He was also voted by his graduating class as most likely to succeed. After high school, Douglas elected to attend Pittsburgh University to pursue a degree in medicine. As an undergraduate he pursued two paths of study earning degrees in Philosophy and The History and Philosophy of Science where he graduated summa cum laude. Douglas was actively involved in the Lutheran campus co-ed ministry and the David C. Frederick Honors College where he earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Douglas continued his education in Pittsburg by matching to the Family School of Medicine at Shady Side Hospital. Upon finishing his there, he was noted as saying “graduating medical school and joining a long tradition of healers is for me a momentous occasion, a goal sought for many years. May God help me always serve my patients with genuine care and skill.” In 1999, Douglas moved to Gettysburg to begin work with Gettysburg Family Practice. Continuing to serve the community, he moonlighted in the Emergency Department at Gettysburg Hospital and became active on the Gettysburg hospital board of directors. He also served as president of the medical staff for several years. Working at Gettysburg Family Practice from 1999 to June 2024, he reluctantly submitted to a medical retirement in July of this year due to worsening of his illness. While at home, he enjoyed hunting, target shooting, wood working, motorcycling, offroading, and enjoying the many activities his wife and daughters enjoyed.
