Biography:
Sterling L. Trostle, 100, a resident of Menno Haven Penn Hall for over six years, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Littlestown, entered into God’s eternal care Friday, March 30. He had health problems for a number of years. He was married to Helen (Fiscel) Trostle for 67 years. She passed away on Aug 2, 2008. Born March 12, 1918 in Germany Twp, Adams County, he was the son of the late Charles C. & Laura (Lemmon) Trostle.
He will be missed by his family; son, Allan & wife, Cindy (Ommert) Trostle of Greencastle; one grandson, David, & wife, Holly & great grandson, Andrew of Mercersburg; one granddaughter Cherlyn Christman & husband, Scott and 4 great grandchildren: Tad, Taliah, Brody & Brielle of Richmond Hill, GA; a sister Kathryn ”Kitty” & husband, William Keefer; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Donald Trostle and a number of nieces, nephews and friends. Sterling was predeceased by 3 brothers and a sister: Norman, Donald, Dennis “LeRoy” and Mildred Trostle.
Sterling graduated from Charles Carroll High School, Carroll County, MD in 1935. He then obtained employment at A.W. Feeser Canning Co., Silver Run, MD. In 1936 he was employed at the Littlestown Hardware & Foundry where he was a pattern technician for aluminum and cast-iron castings. During WWII over one million cast iron hand grenades were made and used along with many other needed supplies for the U.S. Armed Forces.
After 26 years at the Littlestown Foundry, he transferred to the Littlestown Pattern Works, Inc. where he continued as a pattern technician for 34 years before retiring. As a retiree, he enjoyed being a do-it-yourself handy man, gardening, fishing, touring the U.S. and Canada by bus, watching and participating in sports while also enjoying musical and religious programs, being a great grandfather and visiting family and friends.
Sterling was a member of 3 different Lutheran Church congregations, presently Trinity Lutheran Church, Chambersburg and served as a church councilman at two of them. He was also a former Boy Scout leader.
Funeral Service is Thurs, April 5, at 11 A.M. at Little’s Funeral Home, Littlestown with Retired Pastor Chris Renner, friend of the family, officiating. Viewing is 6 – 8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home and one (1) hour prior to service on Thursday. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Benevolence Fund at Menno Haven- Penn Hall, 2011 Scotland Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
