Biography:

Shirley H. Little, 93, of Littlestown, died peacefully Friday morning, Aug 9, 2024, at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover.  She was the widow of Richard A. "Dick" Little, Jr. who died Jan 13, 2011. Born June 25, 1931 in Gettysburg, Shirley was the daughter of the late Edward F. & Ruth E. (Heiner) Hawk. She was a 1949 Littlestown High School graduate and a 1954 grad of Gettysburg College with a B.A. degree in Spanish with English and Music minors. At the age of 40, Shirley, along with her husband, attended Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and after graduating in 1971, served a one-year apprenticeship earning a Licensed Embalmer and Funeral Director degree. She, along with Dick, became the third generation owner and operator of Little's Funeral Home in Littlestown until 1998. Shirley continued working as an organist and cosmetologist until August 2023, keeping her license for 48 years.

She is survived by her son, Gregg Little and wife Debra of Rehoboth Beach, DE; her daughter, Lee Ann Study and husband John of Littlestown with whom she worked; her granddaughters, Rachel Poole and husband Steven of Roswell, GA, Alexandra "Alex" Gray and husband Glenn of Richmond, VA, and Olivia Study of Littlestown; her great granddaughter, Francesca "Frankie" Gray of Richmond; her brother-in-law, John Snoke of Littlestown; her nieces and nephews, Karen Malone and husband Brian, Mark Snoke and wife Cindi; her grand nieces, Avery Malone, Neve Malone and Steph McCullough.   She was predeceased by her sisters, J. Dolores Hawk and Sandi L. Snoke.

Shirley was a lifelong member of Redeemer's UCC in Littlestown, where she had been active in the Chancel choir, church consistory, Ladies Aide and Sunday School; a member of Tri-County Funeral Directors, Capital City Funeral Directors and Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association (PFDA). She was involved with the Junior Women's Club, delivered Meals-on-Wheels and played bridge in two clubs. She was the recipient of the Littlestown Living Legacy Award in 2014. Aside from serving her community, she supported the Littlestown YMCA and Littlestown Library. A lifelong animal lover, Shirley was a proud owner of Emma and Whitney, her Old English Sheepdogs, and Madi, her Wheaten Terrier. Shirley eventually acquired her beloved Himalayan cat, Willie. She was an accomplished cook, seamstress, knitter, crocheter and had a "green thumb". Shirley was indeed a sun worshipper spending many a summer afternoon in her lounge chair. She enjoyed visiting Rehoboth Beach every year with her family and spending hours at her favorite store, Browseabout Books, and of course soaking in the sun at the beach. Above all, her greatest joy was her family, especially spending time with her granddaughters.

The funeral service will be held Monday, Aug 19, at Redeemer's UCC, at 11 A.M. with The Rev. Garry Sheaffer officiating. A viewing will be held Sunday, Aug 18, at Little's Funeral Home in Littlestown, from 2 - 6 P.M. (No viewing in church). Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Littlestown. Along with other memorials, contributions in Shirley's name may be sent to her church at 107 E. King St., Littlestown, PA  17340 or Adams County SPCA, 11 Goldenville Rd., Gettysburg, PA  17325 or Ruth's Harvest, Attn:  Shari Plattenburg, 780 Kindig Rd., Littlestown,PA  17340. The family would like to thank Homewood at Plum Creek nurses for their excellent care given, Dr. Tina Khair and Staff, Hanover VNA Hospice and to neighbors, Mike & Sharon Clouser, for all their help and kindness shown.
